about

On the 24th August 2021, 20 years after my dad's death, I visited his gravestone for the first time ever. I have never felt any need to visit before and his gravestone means little to me. I'm not religious at all. I don't believe in an after life, or a spirit, so in no sense do I believe he's still with us, in any sort of form. In one sense, he does live on though, in me, and in my mum, and in my brothers, in my memories, in my family's memories, in his friends' memories, in photos, in words...and in song.

I wrote 20 on the train while on the way to, and on the way back from his gravestone. I met one of my brothers there, and we sat, in the warm sunshine, by his gravestone and talked about our dad, and about us, and our families and lives. I drank a little snifter of whisky, and, despite what I said about not believing he's still with us, I poured a little drop of whisky on his grave, for him.

Ten was written, 10 years earlier, to my brother who visited the gravestone with me.
